Alright... summer is pretty officially upon us. *headdesk*

So... anyone got any recommendations for things I should get obsessive over this summer? :D I'd really like book recs, but movie/anime/tv recs are also entirely awesomely acceptable.

I'm already thinking about watching Wolf's Rain because of [livejournal.com profile] tahu, but I reeeeeeeeeally need something good to read... heh.

Yeah? OMG!!!! You HAVE to read the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett. They spoiled me for all other published fiction, ever. They have an irresistible leading man, sweeping plots, vivid description, and emotional charge times a thousand. I can't even express how amazing they are - you may want to take a look at some of the reviews on amazon. There are 6 books in the series, starting with THE GAME OF KINGS, and all have the added benefit of probably being at your local library since they were pubbed back in the 60's.

That said, the first book is NOT easy to get into. I had to try 3 times before I could do it. Rest assured, they get easier and better and by the end of the first book you'll be a slavish devotee. The books are called 'romance' but this term means romance in the classical sense - an adventure of the heart and mind, rather than bodice ripping.

Wow... that sounds great! :D I have about a week and a half this summer where I'm stuck indoors with no internet, so six books is perfect. I'll give this a shot!

Let me know what you think of them! They are really dense with detail and plot and of course the intrigues of Lymond, so they take a while to read. It usually takes me at least a week per book to read them - they have a fairly hefty page count, too.

A week and a half with no internet????? Horrors upon horrors!!

:-)

You should watch Heroes! It's so thrilling and awesome - you'll love it!

As for books, I really like the Mortal Instruments Trilogy. There's only two book out so far, but they're really good. =)

Heh... I tried watching Heroes during the first season but it never really... clicked for me. I think it's on Hulu, though... Maybe I'll give it another try. :)

It's hard getting book recs from me because I haven't read a book for pleasure in so long (so I'm looking for recs too).

BUT I know some anime/manga. :D
If you're interested.

Bring on the anime/manga. :) If it's stuff I can (potentially) get for free (at least at first to see if I like it), ALL THE MORE BETTER. :D

Well one of my favorite series ever came out a few years ago. It's called Ouran High School Host Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouran_High_School_Host_Club). It's pure crack because it's a parody of all the other romantic-comedy series. Plus the main character cross-dresses throughout the entire series.

Um, I also love Eureka Seven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_seven) and Vampire Knight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_Knight).

I either watch them on Youtube (if I can find them) or from here (http://mesmerisz.livejournal.com/3570.html#cutid1).

I'd suggest reading just about anything by Haruki Murakami. His books are amazing and surreal and you simply must experience them! (my fave so far is 'Kafka On The Shore')

If you haven't watched the show Six Feet Under, I'm suggesting it. Same goes for Carnivale. You're keeping up with Dexter, right?

You should've told me you were looking for recs! I can give you a ton. XD

Like I said, you should check out Cowboy Bebop. It's a relatively popular anime (it was in the top ten of all time list, last I knew) so it should be pretty easy to find. Although, with this new anime craze, it's not as big as things like Yu-Gi-OH and Naruto and all that crap.

You should check out ANY book by Neil Gaiman but I reccomment Neverwhere above all his others. And there's also the Sandman comic series (which you don't have to bother reading in order.)

I just bought/read, a couple months ago, two books by Chip Kidd which are definitely worth checking out. They're very original, and just as much fun to look at as they are to read. (Most likely, in part, due to the fact that the author is a graphic designer.) So you'll want to read The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners in that order. They're both pretty quick reads, the second being moreso because it's about half the size of the first. I own both if you want to borrow my copies...? I could mail them probably.

And if you're into a depressing yet interesting and uplifting (sort of) book, check out Moloka'i but I'm afraid I forgot who it's by...

And (this is the last one, I promise, unless you want more...) if you want to read a book that's disturbingly hilarous check out Stiff by Mary Roach. It's nonfiction but it's written like diction and seems nonfiction. Also, it's filled with lots of fun fact about dead people. ;D
